Where would we be without the boundless energy of our sons?
We begin with a vigorous hike to the secluded beaches near the Point
Arena Lighthouse, in northern California. This particular Lighthouse area is
one of the most active surf zones because it is the furthest point west,
nearest Hawaii, in California.
Once there, we begin collecting shells. The shells we find have been
exposed by the most recent series of high and low tides. The continual pounding
of the surf rearranges the beach on a daily basis. We roam the beach, combing
it for those ‘secret rainbows flung over the shore’- beauty equaling the mind’s
We then bring them home to our shop and studio. First they are rinsed,
then sorted according to size and shape. When some go together like a family,
they remain a family, incorporated into one set together. Some are left in
their natural state, others are separated (or separate themselves), to be handcrafted
into custom shapes because of an inherent potential.
We next grind them to a somewhat uniform thickness, polish them to a
high luster, and drill the holes. Each piece is finished with a doming resin to enhance both shine and strength.
